The "#women in male fields" trend on TikTok has quickly gained traction, shedding light on toxic relationship dynamics women often face when dating men. The premise is simple: women share their personal experiences of relationship behaviors they find problematic, and then humorously ask what would have happened if they had acted the same way.
All of this unfolds against the backdrop of Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda," making the whole thing both eye-opening and a bit satirical.
One example of this trend shows a woman sarcastically sharing, “He sent me a paragraph explaining how he felt and I replied with ‘idk what you want me to say rn,’” — an all-too-familiar reaction that many women can relate to after pouring their hearts out to a partner.
Another TikTok reads: “When I started punching the ground and balling [sic] my eyes out because I cheated.” Oof.
One of the most popular posts, with a staggering 3.2 million views, features the line: “He was crying in bed so I said ‘here we go again’ and turned around and fell asleep.”
And, of course, there's the classic “When he tells me exactly what I’ve done wrong, so I say ‘I’m sorry you feel that way.’” It’s no surprise that the comment sections of these videos are filled with responses like, “ARE WE ALL DATING THE SAME MEN?” or “This trend makes me realize I’ve never had a unique experience.”
The trend is certainly striking a chord with many women, making them feel seen and understood (by other women, at least). As one TikToker put it: “[The] women in male fields trend is teaching women that it’s not our fault. It’s the subtle guide to red flags.” For some, it’s also a way to find humor in the shared trauma of these experiences.
Not to be outdone, there’s now a “men in female fields” spin-off trend, where men take to TikTok to share their own relationship stories, some light-hearted, others more serious. Is this a direct response to the trend? It certainly touches a nerve.
Either way, you can expect your FYP to be filled with way-too-relatable relationship stories, with “Anaconda” playing on repeat.
