President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus was given a ceremonial guard of honour at Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s House on Tuesday, marking the beginning of his three-day official visit.
The Belarusian leader was warmly received by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and both national anthems were played as President Aleksandr stood at the salute dias during the formal welcome.
A formal contingent of the Pakistan armed forces presented the guard of honour, which President Aleksandr reviewed. Following the ceremony, the two leaders introduced their respective delegations before proceeding to the official talks.
During the visit, President Aleksandr is set to hold extensive discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on matters of mutual interest, particularly areas of bilateral cooperation. The two sides are expected to exchange several agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen ties between the two countries.
In a symbolic gesture, President Aleksandr also planted a sapling in the lawns of the Prime Minister’s House, underscoring the positive spirit of the visit.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by cabinet members, had personally received President Aleksandr at Islamabad’s airport. This visit is expected to further deepen the diplomatic and economic relationship between Pakistan and Belarus.
After the official talks, the two leaders will issue a joint declaration, highlighting the areas of collaboration, and several key agreements are expected to be signed to solidify the future cooperation between the two nations.
Pakistan, Belarus boost ties with 8 MoUs
Pakistan and Belarus on Monday signed eight memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements during ministerial-level talks held after the arrival of President Aleksandr Lukashenko for a three-day official visit to Islamabad.
President Lukashenko arrived at the Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi where he was received by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and senior officials.
"Delighted to welcome my dear friend Aleksandr Lukashenko, President of Republic of Belarus to Islamabad," Prime Minister Shehbaz wrote on X. "Looking forward to our discussions during this important visit," he added. "We will work together to further strengthen these [bilateral] ties."
The MoUs were signed after the 'Pakistan Belarus Business Forum' co-chaired by Commence Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Belarus Energy Minister Aleksei Kushnarenko. A large number of business leaders from both the countries attended the forum.
Officials reported that a five-year agreement was signed between pharmaceutical companies from Pakistan and Belarus, covering pharmacy registration, the supply of medicines, nutritional food, automobile products, veterinary medicines, and logistics.
An MoU was signed between the Green Corporation Initiative and the Tractor Works Company of Belarus.
