The decades-old mystery of D.B. Cooper may have taken a significant turn as the FBI examines new evidence potentially linking Richard McCoy to the infamous 1971 hijacking.

Retired pilot and YouTuber Dan Gryder uncovered a parachute and harness on McCoy’s family property in North Carolina, which he believes were used in the heist. McCoy, long suspected by the FBI due to a similar hijacking in 1972, bears a strong resemblance to the elusive hijacker.

The parachute’s unique modifications match descriptions from the 1971 incident, strengthening the connection. Gryder, along with McCoy’s children, provided the evidence to FBI agents in Richmond, Virginia, in 2023. These findings have led to renewed interest from the FBI, which conducted a thorough search of McCoy’s family property last year, marking the first significant movement in the case since it was declared inactive in 2016. Gryder stated that the FBI agents showed serious interest in the parachute, suggesting its potential as a breakthrough in the investigation.

Solving the mystery could bring closure to one of America’s greatest unsolved crimes, which has puzzled investigators and captivated the public for decades. The FBI’s next steps may involve DNA testing and potentially exhuming McCoy’s body to confirm his identity as the infamous hijacker. While the agency has yet to provide an update, this new evidence has reignited hope for solving the case and unraveling the enigma of D.B. Cooper.
