HYDERABAD:

As bandits of Sindh's riverine areas continue to exist as a formidable foe for the police, a cop was killed and another was injured in an assault on a check post in the Panu Aqil area of Sukkur district on Monday.

The Sukkur police claimed that the Sargo Chachar check post was attacked with rockets and automatic rifles.

Arbelo Chachar, a police constable, was martyred in the attack and Raza Muhammad was injured with gunshots. Both of them were shifted to taluka hospital Panu Aqil. The injured policeman was later referred to Sukkur.

Chachar's Namaz-e-Janaza was offered at the Sukkur police headquarters, attended by DIG Sukkur Faisal Abdullah Chachar, Rangers Wing Commander Brig Nadeem, SSP Amjad Shaikh, police officers and notable persons. The martyred cop was also given a guard of honour.

The check post in question is reportedly located in the native village of DIG Chachar. In his clichéd statement at the funeral the DIG said, "Chachar offered sacrifice of his life to restore peace." He added that the "sacrifices given by the martyred cops will never go waste."

In August this year, striking with impunity, the bandits of riverine areas killed three policemen in the Ranoti area of Ubauro, Ghotki district, only three days after three cops were killed in a raid on a checkpoint in the same district.

The three policemen were heading to work on a motorbike when they were ambushed in the Miani Ghulam Hussain area by a gang of dacoits.

A police party which arrived at the crime scene after the attack found all the three police constables Shafique Gul Jatt, Abdul Samee Samo and Abdul Hanan Malik dead. The assailants easily escaped after shooting them dead.

This happens to be the second such attack in three days in Ghotki district. On July 28, the cops Abdul Qadir Mahar and Zaheer Ahmed Thaeem were martyred in an identical attack on a police picket in the limits of Andal Sundrani police station.
