YSL RICO trial nears conclusion with closing arguments for remaining defendants

Closing arguments began Monday in Fulton County for the YSL RICO trial, focusing on the final two defendants, Deamonte Kendrick, aka Yak Gotti, and Shannon Stillwell. 

The trial, which initially included 27 defendants, has seen most enter plea deals, leaving Kendrick and Stillwell to face charges of murder, racketeering, and criminal gang activity.

Prosecutors argued that the two participated in a violent gang conspiracy, presenting evidence such as surveillance videos and social media posts. Assistant District Attorney Christian Adkins stated, "The evidence has shown their intent and actions." However, defense attorneys pushed back, asserting the evidence is insufficient. Stillwell’s attorney, Max Schardt, remarked, “There’s a big difference between allegations and proof in court.”

The tension in the courtroom reflects the lengthy and complex nature of the trial, which has faced delays including a 10-month jury selection and judicial changes after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville was recused. Despite these challenges, the defense remains confident. Yak Gotti’s attorney, Doug Weinstein, expressed optimism about the outcome, saying the evidence supports a verdict of not guilty.

Adding to this dynamic, Yak Gotti shared optimism on social media, noting prosecutors dropped some drug charges against him. "See y'all by Christmas, God willing Thanksgiving," he wrote, celebrating his reduced charges.

This high-profile trial stems from allegations that YSL, co-founded by rapper Young Thug, operated as a criminal gang affiliated with the Bloods. As closing arguments conclude, the jury will deliberate on the fates of Kendrick and Stillwell later this week.
