Jon M. Chu provides update on ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ sequel and upcoming Broadway musical

Fans eagerly awaiting the Crazy Rich Asians sequel may need to hold out longer as director Jon M. Chu shared new insights into the project’s delays. In an interview with Deadline, Chu emphasized the need for the follow-up to match the high expectations set by the 2018 hit. “There’s no way I’m dragging the audience back. The bar is too high,” he said, noting that attempts to adapt the second book from Kevin Kwan’s trilogy have yet to meet the creative standards established by the first film.

Chu explained that the sequel faces unique challenges as the first movie deviated significantly from the book's plot. “We’ve tried different versions, but we just haven’t gotten there,” he shared. While fans may not see the second movie anytime soon, Chu teased a new development—a Crazy Rich Asians Broadway musical, which he will direct, marking his debut in theater. “That’s very exciting and very fun,” Chu said, offering hope for fans who wish to revisit the Crazy Rich Asians universe.

In addition to the stage adaptation, a Crazy Rich Asians spinoff film is also in development, focusing on Astrid Leong (Gemma Chan) and her rekindled romance with Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.).
