Who is Deyra Barrera? The Mariachi singer featured on Kendrick Lamar’s GNX album
American rapper Kendrick Lamar surprised fans with the release of his album GNX on November 22. Alongside the album, Lamar introduced Mexican Mariachi singer Deyra Barrera, who contributed to the track Wacced Out Murals as well as two additional songs on the album.
Deyra Barrera shared the news on her Instagram account on November 23, posting a photo with Kendrick Lamar. She included a caption, which in English reads:
“The universe works in mysterious ways and I'm so grateful for the way my life has been unfolding these past few months. From honoring my dear friend and Legend Fernando Valenzuela at the World Series to now collaborating with one of the greatest artists of our generation, @kendricklamar.”
She also added: “Thank you Kendrick for giving me the best opportunity of my career, for listening and believing in me. I am so honored to represent LA and represent my beautiful culture with my Voice on your new Album! LONG LIVE MEXICO.. and Long Live Music!!”
Born in Villa Juárez, Sonora, Mexico, Deyra Barrera currently resides in Los Angeles, California, and boasts over 20 years of singing experience. She is celebrated for her mastery of traditional Mexican genres such as banda, corridos, and mariachi.
According to a report by Latin Times on November 23, Barrera’s passion for regional Mexican music runs deep in her heritage. In several interviews, she has mentioned being inspired by listening to her mother sing during her childhood. In 2021, she participated in the third season of La Voz on TV Azteca, where she performed Haz lo que quieras during her blind audition.
In 2019, Barrera collaborated with regional Mexican musicians Carmen Ríos and Verónica Rosales to release a self-titled album as part of the group Viejas De Cuidado. She has also competed on popular television shows like La Reina de la Canción, Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento, and La Academia.
