WhatsApp hit by disruptions across Pakistan

WhatsApp users across Pakistan faced major disruptions on Saturday evening, with many unable to send media files.

According to global internet monitoring group NetBlocks, WhatsApp is currently unavailable through most internet service providers in Pakistan, with its reachability at 0%. NetBlocks reported that the restrictions on WhatsApp backends corroborate reports of media-sharing issues.

The timing of the disruptions coincides with heightened security measures ahead of a planned protest by the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). PTI is calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned.

Despite widespread disruptions, NetBlocks noted that WhatsApp remains partially accessible, with around 50% of servers connected to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited still able to reach the app.

The disruptions were most widespread in Punjab, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw sporadic issues. Karachi experienced the most significant impact in Sindh.

Internet service providers also faced backlash, with customers voicing frustration over the inability to share media files. WhatsApp outages have frequently occurred during major political events, including PTI protests.

In response, PTI-affiliated accounts launched a campaign on social media, urging Elon Musk to make Starlink available in Pakistan. Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, is seen as a potential solution for providing reliable internet in remote areas of the country.

Interior Ministry confirms possible internet shutdown in security sensitive areas

The Ministry of Interior confirmed on Saturday that mobile data and internet services may be suspended in areas with heightened security concerns during the PTI protest.

In a statement, a ministry spokesperson clarified that the internet shutdown will be limited to specific high-risk areas, while the rest of the country will continue to have regular internet and mobile services.

The confirmation followed earlier reports suggesting a complete nationwide internet shutdown after midnight in anticipation of PTI’s planned protest. Sources indicated that Wi-Fi services might also be impacted, although mobile calling services would remain active and only be restricted if deemed necessary based on the security situation.

The Ministry reiterated that public safety remains a priority, with adjustments to services implemented as needed to address security threats.
