Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension, securing his position at the club until 2027, the Premier League champions confirmed on Thursday.
The decision ensures Guardiola will surpass a decade with the club he joined in 2016, where he has enjoyed immense success, winning six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy among other honours.
The announcement will reassure City fans who may have feared the end of Guardiola’s tenure, as his previous contract was set to expire at the conclusion of this season.
In a statement, the 53-year-old Spaniard, who previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, expressed his deep connection to the club.
“This is my ninth season here, and we’ve shared so many incredible moments together,” Guardiola said. “I have a special feeling for this club, which is why I’m thrilled to stay for another two seasons.”
Since joining the Abu Dhabi-owned club in 2016, Guardiola has transformed City into a dominant force, amassing 18 major trophies and implementing a style of football admired worldwide.
However, this season has seen a slight downturn, with the team currently enduring a four-match losing streak, the worst under Guardiola’s management.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak praised Guardiola’s renewed commitment, emphasising his dedication and influence. “Pep’s passion, innovation, and hunger for success continue to shape our club and the game itself,” Al Mubarak said. “His ongoing journey with Manchester City is a tremendous asset to the team, our staff, and English football.”
British media initially reported that Guardiola had agreed to a one-year extension, but this new agreement extends his tenure beyond a decade. The timing is significant as Manchester City face ongoing scrutiny over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations spanning nine years. City have denied all accusations.
Currently sitting five points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, Guardiola remains optimistic. “I’ve always said this club gives me everything a manager could ask for, and I’m incredibly grateful for that,” he stated. “My focus now is on adding more trophies to our collection.”
