Renowned Indian composer AR Rahman has ended his marriage with wife Saira Banu, after twenty-nine years of matrimony. As per Hindustan Times, the separation was made public through a statement representing both parties.
"On behalf and instruction of Mrs Saira and her husband renowned musician Allahrakka Rahman (AR Rahman), Vandana Shah and Associates issue the following statement regarding the couple's decision to part ways," the notice began.
"After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira and her husband Mr AR Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time," the notice continued.
The statement further stressed that the decision was a difficult one for the pair, and was taken "out of pain and agony". The two further requested privacy and the public's respect during this "challenging time".
Rahman, who is credited for music on popular films such as Rockstar and Dil Se, took to X to lift his silence on the matter. "We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts," he wrote.
However, the latter half of his note veered towards hope and acceptance of the outcome, ending with an expression of gratitude towards loved ones. "Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter," concluded the 57-year-old composer.
The note was punctuated with the hashtag #ARRSairaaBreakup, which fans have also been using to express their thoughts on the matter. "Only bodies separate but souls do not. Stay strong, brother!" wished a user on X. "We respect your privacy, sir! I hope you will recover soon," prayed another.
Rahman and his ex-wife tied the knot in 1995, welcoming nearly three decades of union and three children, namely Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen. As per Hindustan Times, their marriage was arranged by Rahman's mother. As fate would have it, Rahman married after the age of twenty-nine, and sought a separation from his spouse twenty-nine years later.
Khatija reposted her father's statement to Instagram Stories, asking for privacy during this difficult time. "I would greatly appreciate it if this matter could be treated with the utmost privacy and respect. Thank you for your consideration," she wrote.
