Former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has been named as sports ambassador by the Dubai Sports Council. The announcement was made during the "Dubai Sports Retreat" held at the Museum of the Future.
Sania Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 in women's doubles, shared the news with her followers on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the prestigious role. "Honoured and grateful to be a sports ambassador for Dubai! Thank you for this incredible opportunity Dubai Sports Council," she wrote.
The appointment comes as part of Dubai’s vision to foster sports excellence and promote active, healthy lifestyles. The event was attended by several sports figures, including UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who was also named a sports ambassador for the city.
The Dubai Sports Council, established in 2005, aims to strengthen the UAE’s capital’s reputation as a hub for sports, overseeing local sports clubs and promoting physical activity across various communities.
The Council’s initiative to appoint international sports figures as ambassadors is part of its wider efforts to inspire youth and promote Dubai as a "sports destination."
In a statement, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, highlighted the significance of the retreat. “The ideas and insights discussed at the event will help shape a brighter future for sports, enhance our clubs’ achievements, and nurture local talent,” he wrote on social media.
Sania Mirza made Dubai her second home following her marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in 2010. Although Shoaib moved out after their divorce, Sania continues to reside there with their son, Izhaan Malik.
