In an effort to enhance urban infrastructure, the Punjab provincial cabinet has approved Rs1.1 billion for a comprehensive feasibility study and design of sewerage and storm water drainage systems in 50 cities across the province.
During the 19th Cabinet meeting, Secretary of Local Government and Community Development Department (LG&CDD), Shakeel Ahmad Mian, underscored the pressing need for improvements in water supply, sewerage, sanitation, and drainage.
He pointed out that these sectors have been neglected in recent years, resulting in mounting public health risks, environmental damage, and severe water pollution that poses threats to both human and aquatic life.
Acting on directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the cabinet decided to initiate feasibility studies and detailed engineering designs (DEDs) through the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC).
The project will include the preparation of PC-I documentation to comprehensively address the deficiencies in sewerage and drainage infrastructure.
The scope of the project will feature tailored assessments for each city, including topographic and GIS mapping surveys, geotechnical and environmental impact analyses, climate risk and vulnerability assessments, feasibility studies, detailed engineering designs, and cost evaluations.
Additionally, an institutional framework will be developed to ensure sustainable operations and maintenance, contributing to the project's long-term success.
