In a move that has set the world of Harry Potter fans ablaze, Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that a long-awaited reboot of the iconic series is officially happening.
Less than 15 years after the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the magic of the Wizarding World is being revisited—but this time as a television series. Gone are the days of sprawling, multi-film franchises; instead, we’re looking at a new era for Potter with a fresh cast to take on the beloved characters.
But what else do we know about the reboot?
What’s the New Harry Potter Series About?
For fans of the original films, the series will be a very familiar journey. David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has assured fans that the TV series will stick closely to the original seven books in J.K. Rowling’s legendary series. Expect to see all of the iconic moments, characters, and locations, but reimagined for television.
Max, the platform releasing the series, describes it as a decade-long project, produced with the same "epic craft, love, and care" that made the original films such a global success. This reboot will introduce the series to a new generation while honoring the legacy of the films. As Max puts it, this will be a fresh take on the series, but fans will still have access to the classic films they know and love.
Who Will Be in the Cast?
One major difference fans will notice right away is that the cast will be brand new. While the original film stars—Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson—won't reprise their roles, the new series promises to cast fresh talent to embody these iconic characters.
Channing Dungey, the chair of Warner Bros. TV, has confirmed that casting discussions will begin after a showrunner is secured. Mark Rylance, known for Wolf Hall and Bones and All, is reportedly in talks for the role of Professor Dumbledore.
Who’s Behind the Camera?
The creative team for this project is equally exciting. Francesca Gardiner, who previously worked on Succession, will serve as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod, also from Succession, will direct some episodes. J.K. Rowling herself will be involved as an executive producer, along with several other producers from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, ensuring continuity in the Wizarding World. Their collective vision will be crucial in maintaining the franchise's legacy while introducing new twists to keep things fresh.
When Does It Come Out?
The series is slated for release in 2026, though an exact release date is still under wraps. Fans can expect it to air on HBO Max.
What’s the Controversy Surrounding the Series?
Despite its early excitement, the reboot is not without controversy. The involvement of J.K. Rowling as an executive producer has sparked backlash from certain fans, given her views on gender and her divisive presence online. Additionally, many wonder whether revisiting the Harry Potter story so soon is really necessary, especially with the franchise already entrenched in books, films, video games, and theme parks.
In response to these concerns, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, emphasized that the focus should remain on what’s on screen: “Our priority is what’s onscreen... the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive about love and acceptance.”
