President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly offered Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik the position of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
According to CNN, Stefanik, the New York congresswoman and current House Republican Conference chair, is a prominent Trump ally and has long been a significant figure in GOP fundraising and strategy.
Known for her steadfast support of Trump, Stefanik rose to national prominence during his 2019 impeachment hearings, earning praise from the former president as a "Republican star." Her loyalty continued after the 2020 election when she backed Trump’s claims of election fraud and objected to certifying President Joe Biden’s victory in the House.
Although initially skeptical of Trump, particularly during his early presidency, Stefanik shifted her stance, a decision she attributed to his popularity in her upstate New York district. This loyalty cemented her as a key supporter and even positioned her as a potential running mate for Trump’s 2024 presidential bid. In May 2021, she replaced Liz Cheney as GOP conference chair after Cheney criticized Trump’s election claims.
Stefanik, who sits on the House Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, has also been outspoken on issues like antisemitism, notably leading efforts to hold educational institutions accountable on the matter. Trump, meanwhile, has ruled out former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who served in his first administration, signaling a new direction with Stefanik as his preferred choice for the international role.
