Research and innovation are the driving forces behind a nation's progress. Look at countries like South Korea and Singapore, which completely transformed their economies by investing heavily in research-led industries. Pakistan holds similar potential. By focusing on key areas such as technology, biotechnology and renewable energy, we can propel ourselves into a brighter, more innovative future.

While Pakistan has made notable progress - expanding its universities and increasing access to higher education - there are still several significant challenges. We face issues like limited funding, a weak research culture, brain drain and a lack of international collaboration. Addressing these is essential to elevate our institutions and foster a culture of meaningful research.

Our universities need to evolve from mere degree-granting institutions to centres of innovation and problem-solving. Many of the leading universities in Pakistan are at the threshold of this transformation, but they need a bold leadership in fostering ecosystems that support both research and innovation.

For true success, we must invest in our faculty and researchers, equipping them with the tools, training and exposure to global best practices. Building modern labs, libraries and digital resources will form the backbone of this effort. At the same time, we need to encourage more research publications, patents and innovations. Stronger infrastructure and a relentless focus on quality will cultivate a more productive and impactful research culture.

There's a disconnect between what universities teach and what industries require. We must bridge this gap by fostering partnerships between academia and industry. Initiatives like internships, research incubators and university-based technology parks can turn academic research into real-world solutions. When academia and industry collaborate, especially across disciplines, innovation flourishes.

Pakistan's universities must also pursue global collaboration. Establishing long-term partnerships with international universities and grant organisations is vital. Hosting global conferences; participating in cutting-edge research areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, biotechnology and sustainable development; and promoting faculty and student exchanges are key steps to embedding Pakistan in global research networks.

Entrepreneurship is another area where universities should take the lead. By encouraging students and faculty to turn their ideas into businesses, universities can play a pivotal role in fostering innovation and economic growth. Supporting start-ups, incubating new ideas and commercialising research must become core functions of higher education institutions. Sectors like agriculture, IT and fintech hold vast potential for innovation in Pakistan, and our universities can be catalysts for that change.

For universities to truly become hubs of innovation, the government must support them with robust policies on intellectual property rights, research funding and commercialisation. Reforms in university governance are also necessary to allow for greater autonomy and freedom to innovate.

It's important that research benefits everyone. This means ensuring inclusivity by creating opportunities for women, minorities and marginalised communities. Regional knowledge and indigenous practices should be integrated into mainstream research efforts, enriching the overall impact.

Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and e-learning have the potential to revolutionise both education and research. Investing in digital resources, smart campuses and cloud-based research tools will elevate the research landscape and enhance the overall learning experience.

While Pakistan's higher education system still faces challenges, there are bright spots. The University of Management and Technology (UMT) is leading the way with its FISCA Research Strategic Plan 2026. This forward-thinking initiative focuses on Funded R&D, Internationalisation, Social and Real Impact, Collaboration, and Advancement of Knowledge (FISCA), providing a clear, comprehensive roadmap for enhancing research capacity and achieving practical outcomes. Each department and school have set specific targets, ensuring that the entire institution moves in unison toward these goals.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of UMT's strategy is its focus on solving local and regional challenges and aligning its research agenda with the country's development needs. As UMT focuses on producing high-impact research, it is expected to raise its standing in global rankings such as the QS and Times Higher Education (THE). The Plan demonstrates a strong commitment from the university's leadership, but its success will depend on active participation from faculty, staff and students.

Pakistan's universities hold the key to a prosperous future, but we need bold steps to transform them into engines of research, innovation and problem-solving. With the right strategies and partnerships, our higher education system can steer Pakistan toward sustained economic growth and global recognition in science and technology. Now is the time to take action.
