Suspect was known as halawa, or phantom, for his elusive tactics

The RA Bazar police arrested a street criminal who had become a significant challenge for Rawalpindi police. Identified as Ahsan, the suspect was known for committing robberies at gunpoint while wearing a helmet to conceal his identity. He operated primarily in Rawalpindi Cantt and nearby areas. Due to his elusive tactics, police informally referred to him as Chalawa 'phantom'.

According to police officials, the suspect used the stolen money to fund an addiction to crystal meth, commonly known as "ice," and bars. His activities had stirred alarm among residents as he continued his crime spree undetected.

According to the police officials, in the CCT footage of the incidents, the accused did not take off his helmet or use his mobile phone so officers couldn't see his face, therefore, they tried to identify him focusing him on his clothing and shoes. Plainclothes police personnel were deployed in various streets for recce. The team seized stolen items, including a wallet, ATM card, and vehicle registration card from his possession.

The police chased Ahsan and reached the spot. In an attempt to free Ahsan from custody, his associates opened fire on the police, injuring the suspect. The police recovered Rs41,000 in cash and Malaysian currency worth Rs13,200 from him. Ahsan has since confessed to over 32 robbery incidents across multiple Punjab districts.

Police said that Ahsan will be formally charged, with evidence presented to secure a conviction in court.
