Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing the development and welfare of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ramday University, held on Thursday in Islamabad.
According to Radio Pakistan, Ramday University, set to be one of the highest-altitude universities in the world at 11,000 feet, will provide education in fields such as environmental sciences, climate change, hydrology, and minerals.
The new university, to be located in the Thagas area of Ghanche district, G-B, will focus on higher education and research, with support from the Ramday Trust, overseas Pakistanis, and other contributors.
PM Shehbaz lauded Justice (Retd) Khalilur Rehman Ramday and his team for initiating the project and highlighted the importance of bringing quality education to remote regions like Ghanche.
He also acknowledged the role of private institutions in advancing education in Pakistan, highlighting that their graduates have contributed to the country’s success across various sectors.
Justice Ramday, in briefing attendees, explained that the university will span 200 kanals and offer unique academic programs tailored to the area’s environmental and geographical context, aiming to position Gilgit-Baltistan as an educational hub for modern sciences and research.
Earlier, during his visit to G-B, the PM had announced a 100-megawatt solar project to address regional electricity needs and launched an education endowment fund for talented and deserving students.
He further noted that housing facilities were provided to 62 families affected by recent floods, reflecting the federal government’s ongoing support for the region.
