A 55-year-old woman died on her way to the hospital after being severely injured in an axe attack by her son, Tauqeer, at their home in Hyderabad Thal, a small town in Menkra Tehsil, Bhakkar.
Police said suspect Tauqeer fled the scene after attacking his mother Manzoora Mai with an axe, but was apprehended within hours after a case was registered.
Eyewitnesses shared with The Express Tribune that as she was being rushed to the hospital, Manzoora Mai expressed her love and forgiveness for her son, calling him "a bit emotional".
In her final moments, she asked relatives to take care of Tauqeer and make sure he was well-fed.
Muhammad Nawaz, the father of Tauqeer and the complainant, reported the incident to the police, leading to a swift response by DPO Shahzad Rafiq Awan, who instructed the immediate arrest of Tauqeer.
DSP Circle Menkara, Muhammad Imran Baig, along with a police team, tracked down and apprehended the suspect.
The murder weapon has also been recovered.
DPO Awan announced that the investigation is ongoing, with an additional three-day remand granted for further questioning.
"I will personally oversee this case to ensure the accused faces the full extent of the law," he stated.
In response to the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar emphasised a zero-tolerance stance on violence against women and children.
DPO Awan reiterated that all legal steps would be taken to secure a strict penalty for Tauqeer, adding, "There will be no tolerance for such acts of oppression, and justice will be upheld."
