RAWALPINDI:

A six-year-old boy died after falling into a deep drain through an uncovered manhole in the Sadiqabad area, police and rescuers said on Thursday.

The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) received several complaints regarding the missing manhole cover, but no action was taken.

Mujahid Yaqoob was reportedly playing in Dr Shoaib Street when he accidentally fell into the uncovered manhole and fell into the deep drain.

The family and neighbours launched a hunt after the child's playmate pointed out a drain. After being alerted, a police team and Rescue 1122 personnel rushed to the spot and launched a hunt.

After a 12-hour search, rescuers found the body trapped in garbage near the fourth manhole on the street.

Sadiqabad SHO said Rescue 1122 retrieved the body from the drain and transported it to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that the child had already passed away.
