CM Maryam Nawaz to reach out to Indian Punjab’s CM over worsening smog crisis

CM Punjab underscored the necessity of diplomatic engagement with India to address this pressing environmental issue

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has indicated plans to write a letter to the Chief Minister of Indian Punjab regarding the urgent smog crisis affecting both regions.

Speaking at a Diwali celebration in Lahore, she underscored the necessity of diplomatic engagement with India to address this pressing environmental issue, describing it as a humanitarian rather than purely political concern.

During the festive event, held on 30th October 2024 at 90 Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam, Maryam Nawaz hosted over 1,400 Hindu families, distributing checks of Rs 15,150 each to support their celebrations.

The event was vibrantly decorated with lights and traditional Rangoli designs, highlighting the cultural significance of Diwali.

The celebration drew participation from diplomats representing the United States, the United Kingdom, and other nations, signifying the importance of international ties and community integration.

Maryam Nawaz took the opportunity to engage warmly with the attendees, particularly the female diplomats, inviting them onto the stage and sharing traditional sweets, fostering a sense of unity.

In her remarks, the Chief Minister acknowledged the critical role of collaborative efforts in combatting smog, stating, “The issue of smog is not just political; it is a human problem. We cannot fight it effectively unless both Punjabs work together.”

She emphasised the need for cooperation and joint initiatives to tackle the environmental challenges that affect the livelihoods and health of citizens in both regions.

Additionally, Maryam Nawaz announced a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering support for minority communities in Punjab. These included the issuance of special identity cards, the establishment of virtual police stations to address minority grievances, and developmental projects in their neighbourhoods.

Expressing her commitment to addressing the smog issue, she mentioned her intention to reach out to the Chief Minister of Indian Punjab to discuss potential collaborative measures.

“I am contemplating writing to my counterpart in Indian Punjab about the smog issue,” she stated, reflecting her proactive approach in seeking solutions through diplomatic channels.

As the event concluded, Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed her dedication to fostering inclusive governance and ensuring that all communities in Punjab, regardless of their background, receive the support and resources they need to thrive.

Earlier today Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan scheduled a special session to address the escalating smog crisis in Lahore and nearby areas.

Citing the critical levels of air pollution, Punjab Assembly Speaker emphasised the urgency of the situation, warning that the region's air quality cannot be overlooked any longer.

Previously Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb announced the demolition of four industrial units in Lahore for failing to install emission control systems.

The Punjab Environment Protection Department inspected 941 vehicles, imposing fines of Rs503,000 on 234 for smoke emissions and impounding 72 vehicles.

Maryam Aurangzeb highlighted Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's directive for strict measures against pollution and smog.

Face Masks Made Mandatory in Smog-Hit Lahore

In response to Lahore's deteriorating air quality, authorities have mandated that residents wear face masks. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached alarming levels, peaking at 520, with an average of 198 reported on Tuesday.

CM Maryam Nawaz has instructed relevant departments to enforce environmental regulations rigorously. To tackle the smog crisis, approximately 2,500 vehicles with faulty engines have been grounded, 469 factories sealed, and brick kilns demolished.

Additionally, law enforcement has registered 318 FIRs against individuals burning straw and crop residues, resulting in multiple arrests. These measures aim to improve air quality and protect public health in the region.
