Johnny Depp says he holds no resentment toward Hollywood despite past controversies

Johnny Depp has stated he holds “no ill feelings” toward Hollywood, even as he reflected on the industry’s perceived hostility during recent controversies.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Depp shared his outlook on past challenges, including his high-profile defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022 and a 2020 libel case he lost against The Sun in the UK. Reflecting on his experiences, Depp commented, “Honestly, I can sit here this very second and think about all the hit pieces, and how everybody was against me,” acknowledging the difficulties he faced in the public eye.

Depp likened his journey to a “vast wilderness” that, much like the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, whom he portrays in his new film Modì, has taught him significant life lessons. Despite the tumult, Depp expressed his refusal to hold grudges. “I don’t have any ill feelings toward anyone,” he explained, adding, “I don’t have this great reserve of hatred, because hatred requires caring. Why carry that baggage?”

Depp also discussed his evolving views on Hollywood, especially after a period when he described his life as “turned into a soap opera.” Recalling his career conflicts, Depp remarked, “I had a few bouts with Hollywood over their particular easy way and the fluid three-act structure… and I am sorry, but I had to get in there and whip it around a little bit.”

The actor recently starred in Jeanne du Barry, a French historical drama where he portrayed King Louis XV. Director Maïwenn had earlier shared with Variety that working with Depp was “difficult” and that the “crew were scared” of him on set. Depp, however, remains focused on his craft, demonstrating an openness to personal growth through life’s challenges.
