A 19-year-old woman tragically died in an industrial oven at a Walmart store in Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 19, raising concerns as sources claim the oven was not lockable.

According to CBC News, the appliance, large enough for a person to step inside, "did not lock," contradicting earlier reports suggesting the victim was trapped.

The woman, who emigrated from India to Canada three years ago, was working at the store the day of the incident. Halifax Regional Police are investigating the case but have found no evidence of foul play so far. "The investigation is complex, and we urge the public to be patient," said officer Martin Cromwell. He added that investigators are working closely with Occupational Health and Safety to determine the cause of death.

The Nova Scotia Department of Labour has issued a "stop work order" for the bakery and one piece of Walmart equipment, though they have not specified which item is under scrutiny.

Mourners have been visiting the store to pay their respects, laying flowers and offering condolences. Satnam Singh Randhawa, a board member of the Maritime Sikh Society, expressed grief over the tragedy, saying, "It's pretty distressing given young people come here with hopes and dreams."

Walmart Canada released a statement saying, "We are heartbroken, and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family." The store will remain closed, and staff are receiving grief counseling and virtual care during this difficult time. The investigation continues as the medical examiner determines the official cause of death.
