Zimbabwe set new world record in T20I history with 344-run total in Africa qualifier

Zimbabwe’s national cricket team has set a new world record for the highest team total in T20 International cricket, scoring 344 runs in their 20 overs during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Africa Sub Regional Qualifier B.

The historic achievement came on Wednesday in a match against Gambia at the Ruaraka Sports Club Ground in Nairobi.

The Chevrons surpassed the previous record of 314/3, set by Nepal against Mongolia in 2023. Zimbabwe’s aggressive batting dismantled the Gambia bowling attack from the start, showcasing their intent to dominate.

Led by captain Sikandar Raza, who played a sensational innings of 133* off 43 balls, Zimbabwe’s total was bolstered by contributions from Brian Bennett (50 off 26), wicketkeeper Tadiwanashe Marumani (62 off 19), and Clive Madande, who smashed an unbeaten 53 from just 17 deliveries.

“Everyone played their part, and we’re thrilled to have made history,” Raza said after the match. His innings featured 15 sixes, and he maintained a staggering strike rate of 309.30.

Marumani’s blitz included four sixes and eight fours, while Madande finished with a strike rate of 311.76.

Prior to this record-breaking performance, the highest totals in T20I cricket included Nepal’s 314/3, India’s 297/6, Zimbabwe’s 286/5, and Afghanistan’s 278/3.

Zimbabwe’s explosive batting display leaves them in a strong position moving forward in the qualifier, with key players contributing at extraordinarily high strike rates.

The record stands as a milestone in T20 International cricket, with Zimbabwe now atop the list for the highest team score.
