Former Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew has spoken out about her unexpected exit from the hit medical drama, describing it as “unceremonious” and “mean.”

Drew, who played Dr. April Kepner for nine seasons starting in 2009, was let go in 2018 alongside co-star Jessica Capshaw, who portrayed Dr. Arizona Robbins. Reflecting on her departure during an episode of the Call It What It Is podcast, hosted by Drew’s former co-stars Camilla Luddington and Capshaw, she shared how difficult it was to process the sudden news.

“We were unceremoniously let go in a way that felt mean and unjust,” Drew said, noting the overwhelming support from fans following the announcement.

Drew has since reprised her role as April Kepner in guest appearances, which she described as “freeing” due to no longer being attached to the show.

She also revealed that her character was originally set for a one-night stand with Dr. Mark Sloan in Season 7, before the writers changed the storyline. Despite her sudden departure, Drew looks back fondly on her time with the series and expressed gratitude for the support she received from fans and colleagues.
