Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to take over as England football manager

Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has agreed to take on the role of England manager.

He will become the third non-British permanent coach to lead the England men’s team.The German coach will officially succeed Gareth Southgate, who resigned after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

According to BBC Thomas Tuchel will take charge after Lee Carsley’s interim spell, which concludes with England’s last two Nations League matches in November against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. Thomas Tuchel's official unveiling is expected on Wednesday at Wembley.

Thomas previously managed Chelsea from 2021 to 2022, winning the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

His most recent managerial post was at Bayern Munich, which he left after the club failed to secure the Bundesliga title last season.

England’s main objective under Thomas will be to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Football Association (FA) had also approached Pep Guardiola in the summer, but the Manchester City manager declined.

Thomas’s appointment adds to his impressive resume, which includes stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, where he won multiple domestic titles.

Neither the FA nor Thomas’s representatives provided official comments on the news.
