In response to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conference in Islamabad, wedding halls, marquees, hotels, and catering shops in Rawalpindi have temporarily closed for five days. This unexpected decision has affected 2,649 weddings during a bustling season, prompting many couples to adjust their plans.
The closure has posed challenges for venue owners and caterers, with some experiencing financial strain and many daily wage workers facing a brief interruption in employment. Major wedding venues across Rawalpindi, including popular locations on Murree Road, were required to suspend operations until Wednesday, October 16, with plans to resume on October 17.
Haji Quddus, vice president of the Marquees and Marriage Hall Association, expressed concern about the timing of the announcement. He noted that earlier communication from the government would have allowed venues to manage bookings more effectively. Despite the challenges, some families have creatively adapted their plans, organizing events in local schools or private spaces.
Interestingly, the situation has spurred growth in local tent service businesses, as families seek alternative venues for their celebrations. Streets and private plots are now seeing a rise in makeshift weddings, with increased demand for tent and catering services.
