Anna Kendrick reflects on her experiences with coercion, childlessness, and her directorial debut Woman of the Hour.

Anna Kendrick, 39, has opened up about her personal experiences with coercion, not wanting children, and her directorial debut Woman of the Hour in a candid interview with The Guardian. Known for her roles in Pitch Perfect and Up in the Air, Kendrick’s new film centers on Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who appeared on The Dating Game in 1978. Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, the contestant who unknowingly chose Alcala as her bachelor. Reflecting on her decision to direct the film, Kendrick shared that it “felt very personal,” as she has navigated challenges in her career and personal life.

The film explores themes of misogyny and the dangers women face in society. Kendrick rewrote a key scene to reflect the subtle ways women communicate discomfort. “What is happening will be very clear to most women,” Kendrick explained, highlighting her desire to accurately portray women's experiences. Kendrick also touched on her personal life, mentioning that she doesn't think about having children, noting, “Why would anyone trust me with a kid?”

The actor-director also addressed her past abusive relationship, which influenced her performance in Alice, Darling. “I have good days and bad days,” she said, describing her ongoing recovery as "challenging."

Woman of the Hour is set to premiere on Netflix on October 18, 2024.
