Personal data of several Pakistanis has hit the internet and sold openly through websites, but the country's law-enforcement authorities remain silent on this criminal activity.
There are websites which advertise the sale of mobile phone numbers, national identity card number, home address, family tree, and even a coloured copy of the CNIC. The vested interest also used WhatsApp in this criminal venture.
People complain that this sensitive data is sold to the criminals by black sheep in government institutions and departments for a few bucks.
They express concern that this data could be exploited by criminals for activities such as money fraud or blackmail.
A PTA spokesperson said that selling such data is illegal and warned that the PTA would immediately block any website involved. "PTA has already shut down many such websites," the spokesperson added.
