LHC to assess call recording petition

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on the maintainability of a petition challenging the notification allowing intelligence agencies to record citizens' calls.

The petitioner's counsel, Advocate Azhar Siddique, argued that granting such permission was a criminal offense.

He mentioned that an identical petition had already been filed in the Supreme Court by the Pakistan Bar Council.

LHC Chief Justice Aliya Neelam remarked that the petitioner challenged the notification which was already under review in the apex court, adding, "You can become a party in the case pending in the Supreme Court."

The petitioner requested the court to hear the case for Lahore and Punjab.

The LHC CJ remarked that a new practice of filing same case in different high courts has started.

After the arguments, the LHC adjourned the hearing sine die.
