KARACHI:

A fire swept through a restaurant in Sindhi Muslim Society on Thursday, destroying its second floor and damaging the rooftop dining area, but luckily no casualties were reported.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the restaurant, located within the remits of Firozabad police station, and quickly gutted everything before spreading to the rooftop dining area. As soon as the incident was reported, police and rescue teams rushed to the scene and called the fire brigade.

The KMC Fire Brigade and Rescue 1122 personnel launched rescue operations. Six fire tenders, and a snorkel were deployed to douse the blaze. The firefighting operations were hampered by a lack of water. However, the conflagration was brought under control after two and a half hours.

The second floor of the restaurant was entirely gutted, while the rooftop dining area was partially damaged in the fire. Fire Officer Zafar Khan said that they successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residential apartments.

"The fire spread from the second floor to the rooftop dining area, but it was contained from spreading to the first and mezzanine floors," he added. "The elevator, dining area, furniture, IT room, and other equipment on the second floor were burnt to ashes." Fire Officer Khan speculated that the fire might have been triggered by an electric short circuit.
