Violence against children

A WHO report has stated that violence is a reality for half of the world's children, with one billion experiencing physical, emotional or sexual abuse each year. The report further states that violence is not only a breach of children's rights, but it also heightens the risk of mental health issues, non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases and social challenges including criminal behaviour and substance abuse. In Pakistan, violence against children remains a pervasive issue. A staggering number of children experience various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional and sexual violence. This harsh reality undermines their immediate well-being and hampers their long-term development and potential. Many children face abuse at home, in schools, and within their communities, often at the hands of those they trust the most. This violence is exacerbated by cultural norms that perpetuate a cycle of silence and acceptance, where victims often feel powerless to speak out.

The repercussions are profound: children who endure violence frequently suffer from mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. These effects can follow them into adulthood, impacting their ability to form healthy relationships and succeed personally and professionally. Moreover, the implications extend beyond individual suffering. A society that tolerates violence against its children faces significant economic and social challenges. Educated, healthy children are vital for a prosperous future, yet violence robs them of their ability to thrive and contribute to their communities. Comprehensive measures must be adopted. Awareness campaigns should educate communities about the rights of children and the detrimental effects of violence. Law enforcement and judicial systems must be strengthened to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. Finally, mental health services should be made accessible to help affected children heal and regain their sense of security. Investing in the protection and well-being of children will yield dividends tomorrow.
