Another life snuffed out by trigger-happy muggers

95 people have been killed resisting robberies so far this year

KARACHI:

Trigger-happy muggers snuffed out another young life in Surjani Town on Thursday, taking this year's death toll in deadly robberies to 95.

As per details, 25-year-old Faisal, son of Ghulam Shabbir, was shot dead resisting a robbery attempt near Pakwan Centre in Lyari, Sector 36. Faisal, who was pursuing a bachelor's degree, was the eldest among eight siblings. He was also a part-time supervisor at a local bakery.

On the night between Wednesday and Thursday, Faisal was going from Gulshan-e-Maymar to Lyari with his elder brother Sohail when they were intercepted by armed muggers near Mashallah Market. The muggers opened fire when the pair put up resistance, fatally shooting Faisal.

According to the victim's father, Ghulam Shabbir, the siblings were returning home after receiving their salary amounting to Rs80,000.

"The muggers snatched the money and two cell-phones at gunpoint, but when they tried to also snatch the motorcycle, Faisal resisted," Shabbir said, adding that the muggers opened fire, shooting his son in the neck. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Alarmingly, the siblings were previously mugged only a week ago. The distraught father alleged that incidents of robberies have sharply gone up since the posting of Qaiser Shah as SHO Khuda ki Basti. He appealed to higher authorities to take notice of growing lawlessness in the area.

The police force seems completely helpless in combating street crimes in the metropolitan city where reckless muggers roam free, looting people at will and killing them on slight resistance. As per latest figures, 95 people have been killed by robbers so far this year in Karachi.
