Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello wouldn’t “cross a line” and write about each other in their songs

The pair have made sure to handle their personal history with care while songwriting.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, who publicly ended their relationship in November 2021, have taken a thoughtful approach to writing about their past together. 

Speaking on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast on September 30, Mendes shared that both he and Cabello ensure they "would never cross a line" when creating music that touches on their private lives.

During the interview, Mendes highlighted the challenge of navigating a public breakup. "Camila and I have done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other," Mendes explained. 

He further emphasized the difficulty of ignoring public opinion, stating, "No matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it's so hard not to be affected by it."

The couple had sparked brief reconciliation rumors in 2023 after being spotted together at Coachella but have since maintained their respective spaces. Mendes noted that their open communication and mutual respect have been crucial in maintaining their friendship. "Immense honesty [and] over communication" have allowed them to remain close, even post-breakup.

Reflecting on their songwriting process, Mendes added, "I don't think either of us would cross a line — we deeply respect each other." 

He reiterated how grateful he is to have gone through the experience with Cabello, describing her as an "amazing human being" who makes communication easy.
