Coldplay's Chris Martin and Ed Sheeran perform surprise set at 2024 Global Citizen Festival
During the 2024 Global Citizen Festival in New York, fans were in for a surprise as Chris Martin and Ed Sheeran teamed up for an impromptu performance.
The Coldplay singer, known for his ongoing support of the festival, had been expected to curate the event, which featured headliners like Post Malone, Jelly Roll, and Rauw Alejandro. However, Martin and Sheeran’s unannounced acoustic set stole the show on Saturday, September 28.
Kicking off the set, Sheeran took the lead with a rendition of Coldplay’s iconic 2000 hit “Yellow,” while Martin accompanied him on electric piano, joining in on the second verse.

Afterward, the duo transitioned into a lively version of Sheeran’s 2017 smash “Shape of You,” which they gave an upbeat, acoustic twist.
The duo continued with Coldplay’s 2008 anthem “Viva La Vida,” both strumming acoustic guitars. Sheeran closed the mini-set with a performance of his song “Thinking of You,” featuring Martin’s smooth piano backing. As the set came to a close, the two artists exchanged a warm hug, leaving the audience cheering.
While Martin was originally scheduled to speak at the festival, Sheeran’s appearance was a pleasant surprise for the fans.
The event also saw other memorable moments, including BLACKPINK’s Lisa debuting her new track, “Moonlit Floor.”
