The sports community is in mourning following the tragic death of professional boxer Mylik Birdsong, who was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles.

The incident occurred around 4:50 pm on Sunday, with Birdsong standing outside a vehicle with his girlfriend when a dark-colored SUV drove by and opened fire.

"A dark-colored SUV drove by westbound on 87th and shot at the victim," an LAPD spokesperson explained to KTLA. After the initial shots, Birdsong attempted to flee towards his residence but was pursued and further shot by two suspects from the vehicle.

Birdsong, aged 31 and boasting a professional record of 15-1-1, was quickly tended to by first responders but succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital. He had sustained seven gunshot wounds to his torso.

The boxing community remembers him as the reigning World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight champion, with his next fight scheduled against Gor Yeritsan on October 26 at a Hollywood Fight Nights event, set to be aired live on UFC Fight Pass.

His last bout took place in March, where he secured a unanimous decision victory over Jerry Bradford.

The investigation into his death is ongoing, with authorities actively searching for the gunmen and attempting to establish a motive. The loss has resonated deeply within the boxing community and among fans, who have been paying tribute to Birdsong on social media.

Just a day before the tragic incident, Birdsong had shared a video on Instagram with his dog, which has since been overwhelmed with condolences.

Tributes from devastated friends and fans have poured in, with one writing, "You didn’t deserve this! I’m so sorry this happened to you. I just knew you were going to win your upcoming fight. Rip champ."
