Snapchat's new Footsteps feature can track location history

Snapchat's "Footsteps" tracks users' travels via Snap Map, letting them see how much of the world they've explored.

Snapchat is expanding its new “Footsteps” feature to all iOS users this week, after initially limiting it to Snapchat+ subscribers.

The feature, confirmed by the company on Monday, uses Snap Map to track users' travels and display how much of the world they’ve explored, according to a report by TechCrunch.

When users activate Footsteps for the first time, it pulls data from their Snaps saved in Memories to calculate previous travel activity.

Moving forward, the feature relies on real-time location data, providing personalized travel footprints on the map.

To use Footsteps, users need to have Snap Map’s Ghost Mode turned off. The feature, however, is private by default, with only the user able to view their tracked movements. It also allows users to turn off tracking or clear their travel data anytime via their profile settings.

Snapchat's push to enhance Snap Map sets it apart from competitors Instagram and TikTok. Both platforms lack a similar feature, although Instagram has announced it is working on a "Friends Map."

Footsteps will soon be available on Android, Snapchat confirmed.
