Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table following a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Wolves at Molineux on Saturday, courtesy of a penalty scored by Mohamed Salah.
The win, though not a dominant display by the Reds, marked their fifth triumph in six matches, underlining a solid start to the season under new manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool’s win over Wolves also saw Mohamed Salah reach another significant milestone in his Premier League career. By scoring the winning penalty, the Egyptian forward further solidified his position as one of the league’s most prolific players.
Salah has now been directly involved in 231 Premier League goals for Liverpool, comprising 159 goals and 72 assists. This achievement places him among the top contributors in the competition’s history for a single club.
What makes Salah’s record even more impressive is the company he keeps in this illustrious group. Liverpool found themselves on the backfoot in the early stages as Wolves came out strongly. For the first 20 minutes, Gary O’Neil’s side looked sharp and caused the visitors numerous problems. However, as the game progressed, the Reds began to settle, and they soon gained control of possession.
The first significant opportunity fell to Dominik Szoboszlai, who squandered a clear chance by firing straight at Wolves’ goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Despite the miss, Liverpool managed to go into the break with a lead. Ibrahima Konaté headed home a cross from Diogo Jota in first-half stoppage time to break the deadlock. The goal gave Liverpool a much-needed boost going into the second half.
However, Konaté’s fortunes changed drastically just after the interval. A mix-up between the French defender and Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson allowed Wolves to capitalise. A mistake by Konaté saw Jorgen Strand Larsen intercept the ball and provide a cutback for Rayan Aït-Nouri, who slotted into an empty net to equalise for Wolves.
Despite the setback, Liverpool quickly regained their advantage. Just five minutes after Wolves levelled, Diogo Jota was brought down in the penalty area by Nelson Semedo.
Salah stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to restore the Reds’ lead. The Egyptian’s strike proved to be the decisive goal, despite a relatively quiet performance from the star forward.
This result saw Liverpool leapfrog both Manchester City and Arsenal to take the top spot in the league table. In contrast, Wolves’ struggles continued as they remained rooted at the bottom, with just one point from their opening six matches.
Looking ahead, Liverpool’s form under Slot has been promising, and their attacking line-up of Salah, Jota, and Luis Diaz will be crucial as they aim to sustain their title challenge. Next up, the Reds face Crystal Palace before high-profile encounters against Chelsea and Arsenal that will serve as an early test of their championship credentials.
