Ryan Murphy, creator of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has responded to criticism from the Menendez family regarding the portrayal of Lyle and Erik Menendez in the Netflix series. In a statement to Variety, Murphy called the family’s claims of a "dishonest portrayal" predictable and urged them to provide specifics. “What’s grotesque about it? Tammi [Erik's wife] and the family… say, ‘lies after lies’ — but then they don’t say what the lies are,” Murphy said. He emphasized the series' accuracy, stating it presents various viewpoints for viewers to draw their conclusions.

Murphy also highlighted the show's impact, calling it "the best thing that has happened to them in 30 years." He added that millions are now discussing the brothers' case and whether they should get a new trial or be released from prison. Murphy stated, “We’re asking really difficult questions, and it’s giving these brothers another trial in the court of public opinion.” Despite the controversy, a new documentary about the Menendez brothers, featuring new audio interviews with them, is set to release on Netflix on October 7.
