Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals, effective immediately.

The 37-year-old all-rounder also revealed that the upcoming Dhaka Test against South Africa in October would be his final appearance in the longest format, marking the gradual wind-down of his illustrious international career.

The all-rounder made the announcement ahead of the Kanpur Test against India, stating that moving forward, he will only represent Bangladesh in One Day Internationals.

His retirement from T20Is follows his record-breaking performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he finished as the all-time leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 50 wickets.

“I have discussed my plans about Test cricket with the BCB, and if I can play, my final Test will be in Mirpur,” Shakib said.

However, security concerns remain a factor as Cricket South Africa has yet to grant clearance for the series following recent unrest in Bangladesh.

Shakib’s decision comes amid political turmoil in Bangladesh that led to the fall of the Awami League-led government, raising safety concerns for the cricketer, who is also a member of parliament.

Shakib concluded his T20I career with 129 appearances, amassing 2551 runs and 149 wickets.

He hinted that the 2025 Champions Trophy could be his final international tournament in ODI cricket.
