Loyal viewers of NBC's hit drama Chicago P.D. tuned in for the season 12 premiere on September 25th eager to see the Intelligence Unit back in action. While the episode introduced a new character, Detective Emily Martel (presumably replacing Hailey Upton), fans couldn't help but notice the absence of Officer Kim Burgess, played by Marina Squerciati.

Early in the episode, viewers learn that Burgess is attending a conference and is disturbed by a particularly difficult case. She's considering cutting her trip short to return to Chicago.

This brief hiatus could also be a clue about an upcoming storyline. The arrival of Detective Martel opens the door for a potential promotion within the Intelligence Unit. Showrunner Gwen Sigan has hinted that a character who has "wanted it for a while" might be getting detective stripes this season.

While Burgess' absence may have caused a stir, there's plenty of good news for "Burzek" shippers.

Season 11 saw Burgess and Ruzek finally get engaged – for the third time! Showrunner Gwen Sigan and actress Marina Squerciati have both confirmed that a wedding is on the horizon for the beloved couple.
