Varsity professors allegedly run unauthorised academy

Short courses offered to students over past two years

Some professors of an engineering university have allegedly set up an academy without the approval of the Academic Council for offering short courses to students.

An official of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Examination Department said the academy had no link with the university.

According to sources, no public sector university allows faculty members to establish an academy and offer courses using the name of the institution.

The Academic Council is a supreme body that plays its role to ensure the standard of academic programmes in each university. It reviews and approves the courses and academic programmes while setting the policies in connection with them.

The academy had been established around two years ago and had launched various short courses, including AutoCAD with 3D, digital marketing, search engine, advanced project management and certified safety officer. A professor termed the unauthorised act tantamount to academic corruption, alleging teachers of then dean and professor level had been involved.

He said those involved had not sought the approval of the Academic Council and charged fee from the students allegedly in connivance with some administration officials.

The university examination department official said there was no legal status of the academy and it had no link with the UET.

He said questions were also asked about the academy by parents.
