How can your social media audio be faked?

Sterling Bank warns online audio can be forged using AI, risking scams against family and friends. Awareness needed.

A bank has warned that recordings of your voice uploaded online can be used in fraudulent activities against your family and friends.

Stirling Bank stated that voice cloning schemes (which can replicate a person's voice from forged uploaded videos) can be used to deceive people.

A survey conducted by the bank revealed that almost half of the population (46 percent) were unaware of such types of forgery.

The bank mentioned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides criminals with the ability to create voice replicas using just a few seconds of a person's audio. This voice sample can be easily obtained from social media.

Subsequently, the fraudster can identify the person's family members and use the fake voice to immediately demand money.

In the survey, eight percent of individuals stated that they would pay any money requested, even if the call seemed to come from a stranger.

The survey also found that 28 percent of individuals believe they were targeted by AI voice cloning schemes last year.
