Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated sequel to The Passion of the Christ is reportedly set to begin filming in 2025. According to Consequence and Italpress, the film, titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, will focus on the events following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Gibson is currently in Malta, scouting locations for the project, with discussions underway with local authorities about using the island nation for filming.

This sequel has been in the works for several years, with Gibson initially announcing the project in 2016. Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in the original 2004 film, is expected to reprise his role. Caviezel has previously expressed his enthusiasm, calling the sequel “the biggest film in history” in a 2018 interview.

Gibson shared some insight into the plot during a 2022 interview, revealing that the film will be more ambitious than the original. He described it as “sci-fi” in nature, suggesting it will explore different realms and timelines, making it less grounded than the first film, which was praised for its brutal depiction of Christ’s final hours.

The original The Passion of the Christ was a box office success, grossing over $600 million globally and becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. Gibson, who has faced personal controversies in recent years, has slowly returned to filmmaking, with his 2016 war film Hacksaw Ridge earning multiple Oscar nominations.

As The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection moves closer to production, fans of the original film eagerly await further developments.
