Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a telephone call today from King Charles III, extending a formal invitation to attend the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa next month.
During the call, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude and accepted the invitation, recognising the significance of the meeting as King Charles’s first summit as Head of the Commonwealth.
He noted that this event marks an important moment in the Commonwealth's history.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to the Commonwealth and the values outlined in the Commonwealth Charter.
He mentioned that the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa would serve as a vital platform to discuss ways to enhance intra-Commonwealth cooperation on critical issues, including sustainable development, democratic governance, and youth empowerment.
Highlighting the King’s longstanding interest in environmental issues, PM Shehbaz expressed his eagerness to engage with Commonwealth leaders on climate change, particularly as Pakistan faces significant vulnerabilities to its impacts.
In addition, the prime minister inquired about the King’s health and conveyed his best wishes for Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales, who has recently completed her treatment.
Reflecting on King Charles's last visit to Pakistan when he was still the Prince of Wales, PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the King would visit Pakistan soon.
