Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Alexei Overchuk arrived in Islamabad today on a two-day visit to Pakistan.

A high-level delegation is also accompanying the Russian Deputy Prime Minister during the visit signalling a deepening relationship between Russia and Pakistan.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral ties, particularly in trade, energy, and connectivity.

During his stay, Overchuk will meet with key Pakistani leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister.

The discussions will centre on boosting cooperation in various critical sectors, reflecting the growing trust and goodwill between the two nations.

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Office, noted that the relationship between Russia and Pakistan is marked by mutual amity, with both countries engaging in multifaceted cooperation.

The visit underscores this partnership, particularly in the energy sector, where Pakistan has been significantly increasing its engagement with Russia.

Over the past year, Pakistan has turned to Russian energy supplies in an effort to mitigate the effects of rising global fuel prices. In response to economic challenges, including inflation and a foreign exchange crisis, Islamabad began purchasing Russian crude oil at discounted rates. In September 2023, Pakistan received its first shipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Russia, marking another milestone in their energy collaboration.

The visit by Alexei Overchuk is seen as a pivotal moment in the growing relationship between the two countries. It reflects both Russia’s and Pakistan’s commitment to fostering stronger ties, particularly in sectors of mutual interest like energy and trade. As the discussions progress, both nations aim to further solidify their cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration.
