Kamran Akmal calls for focus on fundamentals, not captaincy changes

Akmal stresses that fixing team issues requires a shift in mindset, not captains.

Former wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal called on those managing Pakistan cricket to avoid constantly switching captains and advised players to concentrate on refining their core skills.

While talking to a private news channel, Akmal wondered why they always talk about changing the skipper whenever "new heavyweights took charge of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) office".

Is it because they prefer a different captain and are seeking someone of their choice? Do they believe that a new captain will magically bring in players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, or Mitchell Starc to enhance team performance?” he questioned, expressing frustration over the ongoing debate about replacing current captains.

His comments followed a series of setbacks for the Men in Green, including a recent home Test series whitewash by Bangladesh.

The former cricketer argued that if the team continues to play with the same players and under the same system, changing the captaincy would be futile.

"Everyone, including the captain, coach, and selectors, needs to realign their approach and rethink their strategies," he advised.

He emphasised that improving the Green Shirts' performance requires a shift in mindset, not just a change in captaincy.

"Why seek a new captain now if changes weren't made after losses in the Asia Cup, ODI World Cup, and T20 World Cup?" he questioned.

Supporting Babar Azam to remain captain, Akmal suggested allowing the 29-year-old to lead until the Champions Trophy. "What difference would it make otherwise?" he noted.

The experienced player urged a return to the fundamentals of 20-30 years ago, reflecting on domestic and club cricket. "Without mastering the basics, such errors will persist, and changing captains will not solve the problem," he concluded.
