LAHORE:

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has said that the government wants to equip police personnel with body cameras to ensure transparency and better behaviour.

Directing the authorities concerned to improve the police performance, she said realtime monitoring of the personnel would also be possible through the body cams. "The purpose of installing body cameras is to improve the police behaviour and ensure monitoring," she said.

The chief minister said the use of social media by police officials was affecting their service. She directed the police officers to focus on professionalism instead of social media.

She underscored that the protection of people's life and property was the government's foremost goal.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was informed during a briefing that the home department had issued orders on her instructions to ban the use of social media by police officials.

"In the compliance with her directions, the police operation, investigation and traffic wing personnel will install body cams," she was informed.

Steps have been initiated to provide body cams to the personnel and Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal has issued a letter to IG Police Dr. Usman Anwar in this regard.
