Production for Happy Gilmore 2 has officially started, with Adam Sandler confirming the news on his Instagram account on September 9, 2024. Sandler shared a photo featuring his character Happy Gilmore’s iconic black and yellow hockey sweater, revealing that the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 comedy has begun filming. The original film, which saw Sandler play a hockey player turned golfer, was a major success, grossing over $41 million at the box office.

The sequel is a Netflix co-production and reunites Sandler with Happy Gilmore writer Tim Herlihy, marking their ninth collaboration. Although details about the plot are limited, Sandler hinted that Happy will join a senior golfing tour, continuing his golfing journey from the first film. Christopher McDonald is set to return as the villain Shooter McGavin, while NBA star Travis Kelce and actor Benny Safdie may also make appearances.

Sandler commented on the sequel, saying, “We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We came up with an idea and we wrote our a**es off.” The film is being directed by Kyle Newacheck, known for What We Do In The Shadows, replacing the original director Dennis Dugan.

The release date for Happy Gilmore 2 has yet to be announced, but it will stream on Netflix.
