After Shakib, Mashrafe Mortaza also named in legal charges over student attacks

After Shakib Al Hasan, another former Bangladesh cricket captain, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, has been named in a legal case, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

Mortaza, along with 90 other individuals, has been accused in connection with attacks on students during recent protests. Among the accused is also Mortaza’s father, who has been implicated in the same case.

The case was filed by Sheikh Mustafa Al-Muzahidur Rahman at the Narail Sadar police station, naming multiple individuals allegedly involved in the attacks.

This development follows the earlier filing of a murder case against Shakib Al Hasan, another former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team.

Shakib did not return to Bangladesh after his tour to Pakistan, opting to travel to England via Dubai.

It’s worth noting that Mashrafe Mortaza retired from cricket and entered politics, joining Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League in 2018.

He was subsequently elected as a Member of Parliament from the Narail-2 constituency.

On August 6, protesters reportedly set on fire the house of former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as violence and chaos continued in the country after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the nation.

Local media reported that protesters vandalised and set fire to the house of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza after Sheikh Hasina flew out of the country following massive student protests.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza led Bangladesh in 117 matches across formats - the most for his country. He took 390 international wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is during his long cricketing career.

After quitting the game, he entered politics in 2018 by joining the Hasina-led Awami League and was elected as an MP from the Narail-2 constituency.

Bangladesh's leading daily 'Dhaka Tribune' reported that the protesters also set fire to the District Awami League office and vandalised its President Subash Chandra Bose's house.

On August 23, Shakib Al Hasan was among 147 people against whom charges have been filed in connection with an alleged murder during the protests in Bangladesh in early August, an officer at Dhaka's Adabor police station, where the case was filed, confirmed.

The case, of the death of a garment worker, was filed by Rafiqul Islam, father of the deceased Mohammed Rubel.

Apart from being Bangladesh's most famous cricketer, Shakib is a former member of parliament of the Awami League, the party that was in power in Bangladesh until earlier this month.

Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of the Bangladesh at the time of the protests, and many former ministers and lawmakers from the party are among the accused.
