KARACHI:

Pakistan started their 13th Al Rashid International Volleyball Tournament campaign in style when they defeated hosts UAE 3-1 in their opening match on Friday.

Pakistan dominated the game from the start when they took the first set in less than 30 minutes, recording a convincing 25-3 win. However, the joy was short-lived as the hosts came right back into the match, winning the second set 25-23. However, Pakistan recorded a 30-28 win in the next set and sealed the fourth 25-14 to get their campaign off to a winning start.

“It was a great start for us and since our next match is against Iran, the win was a great confidence boost for us,” coach Mazhar Hussain told The Express Tribune. “Iran is a tough team to beat and they are the top-seeds here.

“It’ll be good preparation for the Asian Volleyball Championship that takes place in Iran later this month. I’ve told my team that the result doesn’t matter. It’s an opportunity for us to get used to the opponents and improve our game for the next big event.”
